So I went and saw The Avengers last week and thought it was a bit 'meh'. I posted as much on Facebook and all my friends pounced upon me like I had hated on some cinematic masterpiece.

The Avengers is a 'good' movie, it's got plenty of no brainer action in it, it's got loads of CGI (too much imo), loads of splosions, loads of quips, but lacking for me was an actual story or a good charcterization... oh and that 'villain'.. really?

I realize I'm probably going to get hammered here too... but people CALM DOWN it's ONLY an opinion about a movie, it's not being written into law or anything. I liked the quips, the humor, but everything else for me fell flat, there was next to no character building, next to no story when you actually get down to it, nothing to emotionally attach you to anyone and the villain... seriously?

Avengers kind of sucked <- There I said it.

You may recall I mentioned the antics of Gold Coast based prop maker Nerfenstein late last year when I published that cool Stargate gun, well a lot of blaster mods and some prop making has gone on since then and the latest is a take on the Portal gun in the video games Portal.

Anyone who is a video game fan will know the gun, a large curved two-handed 'weapon' used by hero Chell in the Aperture Labs. Nerfenstein has done a one-handed pistol version of that gun. Whip it out and fire!

You can check out Nerfenstein's Portal gun at her blog, or over on her facebook page. If you're into blasters, Nerf guns and pop-culture props, check her out.

A friend sent me the following video to ogle this week and I have to say I was gobsmacked. What you'll see at the link is a before and after split screen of the pre-remastered Star Trek the Next Generation and the remastered upcoming bluray release.

I was semi-excited about the release of STNG on bluray in Australia, I've got the full DS9 series on DVD and the thought of a bluray release is really too good to refuse. Now on seeing this video, I'm all in. How about you?!

Following the antics of Queensland based prop maker Nerfenstein has been a blaster[er] the last few weeks and her latest prop is definitely one for the Stargate community. The Stargate Lanard is a blaster pistol featuring it's very own stargate.

You can see some images of it here

SciFi Nerf blaster mods

September 20th 2011 02:34
Fans of Nerf guns aren't just little kids any more, with adults taking to the guns all over the world to have fun playing games like "Humans vs. Zombies" or just all out Nerf Wars. It's safe and it's fun, so why the heck not. As well as Nerf Wars. there's also a fairly healthy community of Nerf Modders, people who modify their weapons, either cosmetically (what they look like), or internally (changing the way they fire and usually the power they have).

I've been checking out these mods recently and I'm posting some here for those that don't know what they are. Want to see a Nerf gun turned into R2D2 from Star Wars, or another turned into a Spaceship carrying dangerous cargo? You need to check out GirlyGamer and Nerfenstein. One and the same person. A science-fiction slant on Nerf guns... who knew!

Saw this clip and thought I'd share it here with the orble audience. Harrison Ford is treading the pavement doing promotion for his new film "Cowboys & Aliens", which in itself is something he allegedly hates doing, much preferring being rugged up on his ranch in the middle of nowhere.

Anyway his personal preferences aside, looks like he has a bone to pick with Chewy, if you missed this clip, be sure and check it out, it's pretty funny

Science-fiction series "Falling Skies" has finally aired, but did it live up to the pre-air hype? For me it's a no, but that's not surprising given the sheer amount of press this show had before it released. Lord knows having a huge name attached, doesn't necessarily mean a great product, but I can't help but feel that "Falling Skies" fails in some very basic ways.

Firstly, what is it with TV writers in general that they feel this innate urge to place their female characters in carer roles? Kind of annoying. I know if a zombie apocalypse or alien invasion broke out, I wouldn't be sitting around looking after babies and doing the washing, I'd be kicking some ass. I can't be the only woman who feels that way, but we don't get a great go on network TV. Moon Bloodgood is more than capable of taking on a kick ass role, but what is she, she's a teacher, nurse, carer (hopefully that will ramp up into more of an ass kicker as the show goes on

Game of Thrones

April 30th 2011 09:33
Okay so I hear you already "Game of Thrones" isn't scifi!!! Tough, in my mind scifi and fantasy shows are the same genre, that being my favorite genre, the geek genre. So I wanted to throw this open, who is watching "Game of Thrones"? Add to this, who has read the books it's based on? The reason for this is simple, I figured I would use this channel for selfish means this week, because I want an opinion from a fan of the series, here's my burning question.

If I am watching "Game of Thrones" on TV, should or shouldn't I read the books? Will the books spoil the show, or is the show so far removed from the books it really won't matter

So word is they're going to bump off a multitude of people in the final couple of episodes of "V". I am hoping Tyler is one of them because he serves no purpose but to whine and treat all the women in his life like garbage.

I like "V", but I have to saying, trying to believe the visitors have no human emotions is hard, because all they do is hate, get angry, plot, scheme and generally act very human. Anna constantly does looks that are clearly related to the human emotion of anger or jealousy, yet no one seems to notice. Lisa does these same looks, but again, no one seems to notice. It's all quite inconsistent

Being Human BBC promo

January 4th 2011 00:31
The BBC has released a new promo for their vampire / werewolf / ghost series "Being Human" and it's pretty awesome.

The SyFy channel are launching the US version of this show as part of their "original" series. Err it's not original if you're copying it from elsewhere, just saying. And yeah I'm aware it's really stating they're remaking it, but original makes it sound, well, original
